The Joyce Foundation-Civic Consulting Fellowship is a summer internship opportunity in Chicago for graduate students to develop leadership skills, create a civic network, and have a lasting, positive impact on the Great Lakes region. Within the context of a structured learning environment, Fellows gain first-hand policy reform, systems change, consulting, and philanthropic experience through:

  • Completing a high-impact project for the Joyce Foundation, working side-by-side with a program officer in one of their fellowship program areas: Employment, Environment, and Arts and Culture, or with their new media strategy.
  • Developing in-depth content knowledge through research conducted within that program area.
  • Developing an understanding of key non-profit and public sector issues and approaches as well as foundation policies, operations, and challenges.
  • Support from the Civic Consulting Alliance with project management and program area expertise to take a consulting approach to the project.
  • Weekly lunchtime roundtable series includes conversations with leaders in the government, business, and non-profit sectors.

Candidates should be registered in a graduate degree program in business, public policy, public affairs, not-for-profit management, or other related degree. Applicants should possess:

  • At least two years of previous work experience
  • Significant analytic, relationship management, research, and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of people in a complex political environment
  • Track record of success and ability to get things done in multiple settings
  • Desire to improve the quality of life throughout the Great Lakes region

Fellows commit a minimum of 11 weeks from May through August. This is a pilot program in 2012 and a joint collaboration between the Civic Consulting Alliance and the Joyce Foundation. Compensation for the summer program is $5,000 plus any school matching funds.
